30 Before 30

So.  I turned 29 on the 4th of July.  (You may have seen or heard the fireworks - I hope it wasn't too alarming.  People get kind of excited about my birthday.  I try and tell everyone not to make such a big deal, but...)

;)

Anywho - I guess these 30 Before 30 lists may be kind of overdone, but you know I can't resist a good list.  Particularly a list of goals!

So here's what I'd like to accomplish in the next year:

1. Run a 10k
2. Finish my WIP
3. Buy a kayak and paddle 3 different rivers
4. Get CPR certified
5. Take a class in something I've never tried before
6. Take a trip to a state I've never visited
7. Go see a play or musical
8. Have our wedding pictures made into an album
9. Reorganize/update filing cabinet
10. Make an emergency kit (in case of zombie attacks, etc.)
11. Pay off one student loan
12. Call or write my little sister at least twice a month
13. Purchase one piece of original art
14. Talk to both my grandmothers about their life story and take notes
15. Climb a mountain - any mountain - to the top
16. Go to 10 yoga classes
17. Do something fun in Boston that I've never done before
18. Save $5,000
19. Learn to use a sewing machine
20. Frame my diplomas before they get lost or waterstained or something
21. Make my bedroom my favorite room - cozy, simple, light
22. Make my office an inspiring space
23. Take myself out on a really lovely date
24. Find "my style" and begin to create a coherent wardrobe
25. Pay it forward to a stranger
26. Go TV-free for a week
27. Send 5 people gifts just because
28. Read 50 books
29. Hang art in every room in the house
30. Do something very, very cool for my 30th birthday

Well, if nothing else, I don't think I'll be bored this year.  :)  What's on your life list?

Happy belated 4th!!

  2. Love this list! My 2 cents:

-climb Mt. Washington, then you can forever feel superior to people with the "This Car Climbed Mt. Washington" bumper stickers. It's been >12 years, and I still scoff at them!
-Pittsburgh has 3 rivers, so if you want to knock #3 off your list in one day, you have a place to crash here!
-I spent some time last year on my style, and found Already Pretty to be a great resource for getting started.

    Happy birthday!

    1. That is hilarious about Mt. Washington. Hilarious and BRILLIANT. Thanks for pointing me to Already Pretty, I will check that out! I am definitely in need of some styling.

And if I show up on your doorstep on July 3 of next year with a kayak strapped to the roof of my car, you'll have no one to blame but yourself. :)

  3. Happy Birthday! From what I saw on TV, Boston went bananas over it - you must be a very popular person there. :-)

And what a great list. My only tip would be to bring along a recorder when you interview your grandmothers. I did that years ago with my grandfather, and there's no way I could've gotten down all he said, or his personality, or the way he phrased things, by taking notes.

Here's a sample, spoken in a deep Yankee accent: "Courting? Nah. Just go make a date, take ‘em for a ride in the ol’ horse and buggy. Take ‘em out in the rowboat and go out in the river and row around."

    1. Yeah, I guess God had to try and get in on the action with an impromptu, lightning-filled fireworks show as well. Show off. ;)

That is a great idea about bringing a recorder when I speak to my grandmas - it would be wonderful to be able to look back and hear their voices as well. Particularly my super southern grandma, who has the best drawl. (It'd be funny to mix the audio of her stories with your Yankee grandfather's stories!) Also, horse and buggy? Rowboat? Don't take this the wrong way, but I'd totally go out on a date with your grandfather.

    1. You and me both, buddy. You and me both. :) No time like the present! (...And other cliches designed to stop me from continuing to wear the same ratty shirts I've been wearing since I was 17...)

  5. Happy birthday, Jessica! Throwin' all kindsa confetti. :) :)

    1. Thanks Suze! *basks in confetti explosion*

I am so intimidated by hot yoga, but now I may have to give it a shot! I'm 95% sure I would faint. Or maybe cry. (And now that I think about it, I suppose those don't even have to be mutually exclusive.) But everyone raves about it, so clearly there's something going on there. Hmm. I'll have to see if I can muster up the courage. :)

  6. That's a very impressive list. How's the student loan going? I could teach you to sew....if not for the long distance. Happy 29, on year to go on all of those great idea!

    1. Ha, well, I have 3 separate student loans (well, technically one was a bar loan - thanks law school!) - one of them won't be paid off for another 20 years or so, one has an incredibly low interest rate... and one has a higher interest rate and a lower balance, so that's the one I'm aiming to be rid of this year. Woo!

Too bad you can't teach me to sew, I could use a lesson. :)

  10. Hiya!

I've been away for a while, but back now and trying to catch up -- Happy Belated Birthday!!!!

Love your list. I do hope you get them all accomplished, but if you don't mind, I'll suggest a supplementary #31:

"Laugh often, smile frequently, love deeply, and try not to get too stressed out over arbitrary to-do lists."

  11. Hi!

You know, I could swore I posted a comment here. I know I filled it out, giving you a belated "Happy Birthday!!!" and everything...

Maybe it's still lost in moderation?

Well, I really hope you're doing great, that everything is going well for you, and that your absence from this blog just means your life is so filled with joyful activity you just don't have time to blog.

And if you ever return to the blogosphere, I've got a few new awards for ya in my 8/1 post. ;^)

    1. Ack - your comments DID get lost in the murky world of blogger moderation. Settings I don't even remember setting, I tell ya. I'm so glad to hear from you. I definitely missed you in your absence! I have been MIA myself, obviously, and may unfortunately end up staying that way for a bit longer. We moved, finally, but life has been filled with unpacking and electricians and roofers and painters, etc. so I'm barely keeping my head above water. Happy as can be, though! Just, y'know, slightly overwhelmed. I hope you're doing well! And thank you for the award!! What with my complete lack of blogging these days I feel completely unworthy, but I appreciate it very much nonetheless. :)

That's quite a list -- so good I think I shall steal a couple of them for myself. :-)

Here are a few things on my bucket list:

    Ride an elephant
Watch the sunrise from my roof
Have a library in my home
Help someone accomplish a life long dream
Do the 12 days of xmas for a family in need, ending with lots of actual presents on xmas morning

Love the blog! New follower :)

  14. Good Luck! I did one these. Not getting very far though. Think it might need editing.
